Know your hair

Before you embark onto your dreadlocks journey, it is always important and advisable to know your hair in terms of hair type and density.  Identifying your hair type will help in determining the outcome of the dreadlocks in terms of quantity, thickness and length.

Hair is a protein filament that grows from follicles found in the dermis, it is composed of 95% Keratin (a fibrous and helical protein). Synthesised by keratinocytes, Keratin is insoluble in water, thus ensuring waterproofing and protection of hair.

Hair type typically refers to the shape of a person’s hair. Hair can be straight, wavy, curly, or coily. The hair consists of hair itself (thus the shaft) and the hair follicle. The hair strand consists of different layers that includes the cortex, surrounding cells and in thicker hair, a central medulla. The shape of the hair follicle determines the shape of a person’s hair.

As hair stylists we use the infographic chart on the right (Andrew Walker Hair Typing System) categorization system to identify hair;

There are 3 hair factors that determine the outcome and maintenance of dreadlocks, thus;

  • Hair Density – Hair density refers to the number of hairs that a person has on their head. The more hairs a person has, the higher that person’s hair density
  • Hair Structure – Hair structure refers to the thickness of the strands of the hair. A persons hair can be fine, medium or coarse. Note: The hair fibres become shorter and finer as a person ages.
  • Porosity – Hair porosity is a measure of the amount of moisture that a person’s hair can absorb. Hair porosity depends on how many gaps or tears are present in the cuticle layer. Hair is naturally porous but however hair that has sustained damage due to bleaching or chemical treatments is more porous than untreated hair.

Straight hair does not lock into dreadlocks easily hence the need for extensive crocheting and if left unattended can easily become shapeless.  To avoid lumps and bumps, these kind of dreadlocks need constant attention especially during their early stages.  On average it takes about six (6) months for these dreadlocks to settle and be solid.

Wavy hair and Curly hair do not lock easily too but however the dreadlocks hardly lose shape once started.  This type of hair is needs more crocheting than the Kinky hair.

Kinky hair is relatively locks easier than the rest of the hair but very fragile.  It needs great care as it can be easily affected by external factors such as hair products such as peroxide which may lead to hair breakage.  With great care, the dreadlocks are always on point.
